when I turn the steering wheel a warning 'bell' sounds. there are no lights coming up on the panel to indicate what the problem might be. any suggestions much appreciated.

It sounds lime the EPs, electric steering warning, does your car have electric power steering?
Some faults won't show up on the dash board unless they are a constant fault, a slight issue may not be enough to get the EM or EPs light on.
