There is a spanner symbol on the dashboard and i thought it was because the brake light bulb was out but after replacing the bulb the symbol still remains, any ideas?

Is it not the service indicator symbol? If so you are due a service and it will need resetting .This works on some models for resetting indicator ,

1. With the ignition switched off, press and hold the trip meter button.
2. Turn on the ignition switch, and the display begins a countdown. When the countdown reaches 0, release the trip meter button, and the spanner service symbol in the display will disappear.
3. Turn off the ignition switch.
4. Turn on the ignition and check the correct mileage to the next service interval is displayed.

I would agree that your Car is due a Service or if it has been recently Serviced it was done prior to the Interval being reached and that figure has now been reached and consequently the light is showing. If it was serviced recemtly take it back to whoever may have done it and get them to set it correctly.
