What problems can be caused by a faulty Exhaust Manifold Gasket?

Check Engine warning light showing on dashboard

The dashboard warning light showing on this page (or one very similar, sometimes a slightly different shape or colour) has appeared on the dashboard and doesn't go off when the car is running.

Smoke coming from engine area

There is smoke coming from the engine area, the smoke seems to be coming from the area where the exhaust joins the engine (the exhaust manifold).

Engine does not sound or feel normal

The engine doesn't sound normal, it can sound like it's struggling to keep running or out of time. The engine note produced by the engine can also sound very different, it's often a deeper, more bass heavy sound that it is normally.

Car not accelerating normally

When pressing the accelerator down the car does not accelerate as it's supposed to, there is sometimes a lag or delay between pressing the pedal and the car accelerating. The acceleration is sometimes slower than it should be and the car can feel as if it's hitting a limit that stops it going faster.

Engine makes ticking sound

When idling the engine sounds like its ticking inside. The ticking noise is sometimes louder, often just after starting up it's louder. The ticking sound increases in frequency when the accelerator is pressed down to increase engine revs.
