After my engine mysteriously going bang in fifth gear at approx 70mph(not exactly straining a 2L!) i have a constant smell of burning oil in the ventilation system. any ideas how to rectify it without shoving 50 magic trees in it!?
Problem added: Dec 19, 2007 (16 years ago)
Is it spent oil from when the engine went pop?!

Could be some oil residue in the heater system thats stuck to the inside of the pipes.

I dont think there is a real solution to this unless you whip out the entire air system and clean it, thing is if you do that the car probably wont start again being an Alfa.

Beautiful cars but typically Italian.

Anyone else have an idea?

check where the heating system intake is,usually behind engine on bulkhead.rubber pipe faceing down.check around it.have also known slight exhaust blow to smell like burnt hot oil if near inlet hose fumes could be dangerous oil or exhaust

I would be checking the engine for a loose or damaged breather hose.
