1985 Volkswagen Transporter coil light

Hi, could anyone give me any clues as to why my coil light sometime comes on whilst driving and somtimes does not come on at all? Other than faulty wiring, could it point to something else going on? Many thanks in advance for any replies. Tom

Might sound stupid ,but on later models that light would come on if fault with brake pedal switch or brake light bulb out .Could check brake lights with / without side lights on .
