Fumes (exhaust ?) getting into ventilation system to dashboard outlet vents somehow ?

When idling , in slow traffic in towns, the vents on dash emit fumes as if from exhaust ???? Don't when high speed on motorways or whenclosed circ on As if intake for ventilation system is sucking in fumes when stionery or low speed.
Anyone heard of this ? have had this ?
I have had new motor fitted for fans as running too hot drawing too muchpower, replaced. Have had engine steam/chemically cleaned to remove any oil on hot parts. Have changed filter in vent system. Can't see any break in rubber seal along top of engine compartment. manifold gasket seems perfect.
Just don't see how fumes getting into intake vent ?
which is outside of engine compartment.
Any ideas please?

If it only happens in traffic, are you sure that the fumes are not coming from the vehicles in front of you...

As it's a 2009 car , take it back to dealers for checking under warranty ?

Thanks to two responders.
1st NO it isn't from other traffic. This is doing it when parked and idling, as well as slow driving. As if fumes not disapating away and being sucked in. Prevented when sealed ventilation button pushed on. Immediately when off. So drawn in somewhere. Even though it shouldn;t be as seperate sealed compartment from engine compartment.
2nd, Warrantee no use too much mileage

Checked crankcase/engine breather system / hose ?

Don't understand connection ? The fumes come out of the actual vents on dashboard. Which to me should be a closed system between intake below windscreen and vents on dash. Getting into that somehow. Can't see any breaks/openings in system.
It's as if fumes can accumulate/build up,around engine area when stopped/slow and are sucked in, but when you stand with face over area of intake on n/s front, can't smell anything.

Not fumes from heater matrix by chance ?
Answered Nov 24, 2011 (12 years ago)
Thanks ref heater matrix. No as heater not been switched on, cold air only.
Common sense says must be a hole/access into pipework of sytem, to allow fumes into sealed system. Should only have holes at each end, fresh air intake and dash vents out.
Have layed on floor to see if fumes getting into veh cab, only thro' vents. Prove being when button pushed to close outside intake to ventilation, recirculate, no smell. Push again to open, immediate smell. So must be accessing vent system somewhere ??
Just cant find a hole or open joint.

And you say you've changed pollen fiter ? Looks like you have a strange one there .Dont suppose the VW dealers are bursting to give you possible causes / advice ? Maybe contacting VW direct would get you some help , possibly customer services or technical services ? Interested to hear if you get it resolved , all the best .
