2005 Volkswagen Touran loss of acceleration

A few times now; on a longish drive the car loses ability to accelerate; particularly when on a slight incline. This will persist for remainder of journey, i.e. max speed around 40-50mph with now power to overtake. Will correct itself after engine has been stopped and left sitting a few hours. Any ideas whats going on?
