Vw sharan starting problem

1998 Volkswagen Sharan 1.8 20v manual
Car: Volkswagen Sharan
Year: 1998
Variant: 1.8 20v manual
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi everyone, I have a vw sharan 1.8 petrol,
And the other day it stalled and wouldn't restart. The starter motor spins really fast but doesn't sound like it's turning the engine over. But if I put it in gear and try again it lurches forward but won't bump start even using good old roll down the hill way.
It's not the cambelt as I took the cover off to check, and the auxiliary belt is good too, the battery is only 2 days old.
The car was tappy for a little while before, last year the oil pump was replaced but only with a cheap one, I don't know if that's related

Sure the belt hasn't jumped , throwing the timing out or sheared teeth off the belt ?
