1999 Volkswagen Sharan sudden misfiring / sludgy rusting up of coolant fluid

Car: Volkswagen Sharan
Year: 1999
Variant: VR6
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
very abrupt misfiring of engine close to home led to parking up and inspecting coolant in the header tank - which was dark and rusty with some white sludgy foam on top.

Coolant was clear just days before - however, i must confess it's likely to be mostly water (as opposed to any special kind of fluid).

Haven't turned it over since. What should i look at doing first?

Could be head gasket , especially if cooling system is pressurising .A block test will confirm or not .
