1989 Volkswagen Polo engine cuts out when cold

my car keeps cutting out when cold and on automatic choke, but recently it has not just been when it is cold, it mostly happens at traffic lights, junctions etc when i take my foot of the accelerator and then when stopped.
any ideas why?

Could be idle control valve / throttle body needing cleaned or replaced .
