1991 Volkswagen Polo engine cut out/exhaust

Since Monday my Polo seems to be occasionally cutting out while standstill in traffic, but while travelling on Wednesday I changed gear which ended up giving me a jerking effect for a few seconds then all of a sudden my exhaust went off like a chimney. This stopped as soon as i pulled over, but noticed a lack of drive as soon as i started to drive again. a few hours later i had a look at the engine fearing it was the head casket that had gone, but when i checked the oil it was fine, but I have noticed a dodgy smell from the exhaust when its running and the engine sounds like its fading occasionally like its almost about to cut out again.

hiya pal
just because you ain't got water in oil/oil in water which are two obvious signs of poss head gasket failure, doesn't mean gasket is ok. have you loss of power, does engine sound like it's missfiring, have you got white smoke from exhaust & is the cooling system pressurising excessively. if the answer to any of those questions is yes, then theres a good chance gasket has gone. investigate these symptoms & let me know how you get on. if you're not mechanically minded, then i'm afraid it's garage time for your car. best of luck pal. regards dj dave.

hey,
i had the same problem with my polo, and i went over all electrics, fuel lines and vacuum valves,
but when i was working on it over the weekend i noitced the butterfly in the carb was sticking but i over looked.
at the piont of desperation a friend told me that the only thing left was the ecu, im still not sure if my polo has 1???
so the offer night sat in bed going over every thing in my head, and i remembered the carb butterfly, so i cleanned it all up including the bore with a little wire wool and what did you know she works great again,
i hope this is the same problem your having and can be fixed easily for you.
