VW Polo won't start, engine making lots of horrible noises when I try, tryed bump starting it, topped up oil, coolant, battery seems ok, has over 170000 miles on it, has had a few problems starting before but normally starts 2nd time and never had such nasty noises before. Could it be the cold?

Hard to say from info given . Could possibly be starter motor noise .Is engine turning over ?

Its not turning over its trying to start up, making grinding noises, then whirring noises once its given up. Sounds dry? if that makes sense, like theres sand in there or something? Thats why I thought it might be the oil level. Its got half a tank of petrol so its not that. It started fine last night then wouldn't start this morning.
