1996 Volkswagen Polo surging tick over and irratic missfire and hesitation throughout revs

Car: Volkswagen Polo
Year: 1996
Variant: 1.4 CL
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hello all. My 1996 1.4 polo recently developed a surging in the reves and iratic misfire at tick over that has now progressed into hesitation and random missing whilst accelerating and also cruising. The car has always been well maintained and done less than 100k. So far i have replaced the plugs, leads, cap, roto arm, head gasket with complete top end rebuild including skim and exhaust guides, lambda sensor and a tank of Cata-Clean fuel system cleaner. Adjusting the distributor timing makes little overall difference. Seems to be running rich but possibly due to unburnt fuel. It runs smooth and is nice and lively on the odd occasion when not miss-firing.
As you can tell it is now beginning to drive me to dispare. Any help or advice will be most appreciated. cheers, jason

Hiya Jason.

Please, please, please let me know how you get on with your problem and if you find a solution because i am in the exact same situation.

Have been to 3 separate garages now and they are all scratching their heads, in fact they have made the problem worse, not better as its constantly missing now.

Cant believe there is so many threads on this problem, but never any solution.

Thanks

as you have done all you can with sparkplugs, distributor and cables, may i suggest a faulty lambda sensor

not too difficult i hope and not too expensive i had a similar problem with a 1.6 persistent engine fault.
