2000 Volkswagen Polo intermittent starting issues

I have an intermittent recent problem with my VW Polo 1.4i S MkIV, 2000. Occasionally when I turn the key the starter spins, but doesn't engage. The fuel pump cuts in when ignition on, everything electrical seems to work fine. This is becoming an increasingly frequent problem - however I have noticed a pattern (or know when it will or won't start) but understanding what actually causes the fault? - I'm firing blanks!
Basically, I have noticed that if I attempt to start it in gear, with clutch depressed - the starter fails to 'engage'. Start the car in neutral, clutch depressed - it fails. Start the car in neutral, clutch engaged (effectively turning over un-engaged gearbox) she fires up!!??
The next step, I guess, is to get the battery drop-tested - I'm guessing that the battery may not quite have the punch needed to turn the engine over, with the additional 'lag' or pressure of the clutch plate (I have a bad habit of starting car in gear, with clutch depressed) - if the battery appears ok - what next?

Could be the starter pinion sticking on shaft , sometimes dirt / dust can cause this . If so , can be easily cleaned and freed off . When starter removed , check pinion teeth and ring gear also .Could also get starter load tested .

I had a simililar problem with my polo, and it was the earthing cable from the battery to the bodywork. Because it had eroded, it was occasionally giving power and occasionally not enough, so my car appeared to rev itself. I don't know if this is the same problem but have a look!
