1996 Volkswagen Polo pinking?

My 96 polo seems to be pinking on acceleration or it may be the tappets, are these adjustable? also smells really hot although its not! changed oil, filters, dizzy cap and rotor, no difference. any ideas??

have you tried getting the ignition timing checked to adjust it properly you will need a timing light and its just a case of moving the distributor slightly
