1987 Volkswagen Polo no acceleration

Hi, im wondering if someone can give me an idea of what happened my car as im going to the garage tomorrow. I was drivin home from work today i went into 2nd gear as i was slowing down, next thing i hear was a crack noise. The car just reved an wouldnt move, i tried to put it in 1st, 2nd an 3rd gear an the gear just flopped from side to side.

Any ideas?...
