2004 Volkswagen Polo excelleration slower than normal in 1st 2nd and 3rd gears

there is a unusual smell in the car now.. and ive noticed that when i accelerate in 1st 2nd and 3rd gears, it doesnt pick up speed quicker than usual. These cars are quite nippy but even i can notice that it has become alot more sluggish than normal.. can you help me?
