Revs restricting to under 2000

2002 Volkswagen Polo 1.2
Car: Volkswagen Polo
Year: 2002
Variant: 1.2
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Twice in a week I have started my car and after pulling of the revs wont go above 2000. Switching off and restarting car seems to cure eventually.Although today took 3 or 4 attempt as every time slowed for junction etc the same problem happened again. I have no idea what it is and i am really hoping its not something terminal.

more than likely a cam or crank sensor on its road out

maybe the car is telling u that it is service time. if its the crank sensor then your car would keep cutting out and struggle starting, and if it was an air mass meter you would still be able to rev the engine but you would have reduced efficiency when accelerating.

firstly 1.2 polos do not have air flow meters, af is worked out by the ecu taking a calculation of map and throttle position. the fact that the car cures with an ignition cycle would also indicate and electrical fault, ruling out service is due. best bet is to get it checked by a reputable garage, there arent many sensors on the 1.2 that can limit rpm to 2k, i previously listed the first two that came into my head (most common)
