2002 Volkswagen Polo reverse gear switch

My reverse lights do not come on when I engage reverse gear. I have had the bulbs checked and they are OK, but the shop told me that I probably need to replace the reverse gear switch ????? Is this something I could do myself? In which case where is it in the car. Many thanks for any help you can provide.

you will find it under the bonnet around the gearbox area normally has two wires on it

located at the front of the gearbox by the starter, easist access from underside, before rushing out to by a swith check the wiring at the plug as these break regularly
