2006 Volkswagen Polo misfire/low compression cylinder 1 ..exaust light on

Car: Volkswagen Polo
Year: 2006
Variant: 1.2
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi . I have been told that this car has low compression in cylinder 1 .The exhaust light comes on when car is at idle speed .As the idle speed is a little off the car feels lumpy at idle but drives perfectly .No power loss and it is nippy .I have been told it may be a sticky valve and needs a head off job to sort (although i have put a can of 44k engine cleaner in the fuel as im told this will clean the carbon from the offending valve). As this is very expensive and cash is a little tight at the moment i might have to live with it .I am afraid that i will do further damage to the engine if this is not done though .

So my question is this . Can i operate the car with low compression and a slight misfire with the exhaust light showing from time to time or is this inadvisable ?

What were the compression readings ? May well be a sticky / burnt valve if quite a variance, but I would check the plugs and coil packs which are subject to breaking down causing misfire first .

If the valve has been sticking and not closing , most likely it will be burnt and engine cleaner wont help .It could be a sticking hydraulic tappet and changing oil and filter , especially if not been done for a while MIGHT help .Probably advisable after you have used an engine cleaner as any s*** will be in sump .A misfire can cause unburnt fuel to build up and damage the cat convertor , but if only slight you may get away with it .It would help if you avoided short , stop /start journeys as better to get engine up to operating temp rather than running on rich cold start mixture.Hope this helps .

P.s it is a known fault with the valves / valve guides on that car .
