2002 Volkswagen Polo gauges going mad and abs light permanently on

Car: Volkswagen Polo
Year: 2002
Variant: hatchback manual, C 2.0 2002
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
On a long run my car started to show the ABS light on permanently. Then other warning lights started to flash on and off and speedo and rev counter started to flick violently, but without loss of power in car. Pulled into services and called RAC who checked charging rate and car charging normally, and running, but ABS light permanently on. RAC man seemed to think it was a charging problem, and as it getting dark with 250 miles to go, it has had to come back on a transporter. Any ideas what could be causing this as not sure where to start.
