my 1.9sdi polo estate revs die, even at speed, when I switch headlights on. Any ideas where to best start testing.

Check alternator output voltage and alternator earth strap for corrosion

Any idea what output voltage should roughly be.
I didn't think it would be alternator because heater / heated screen doesn't seem to affect revs.
