2004 Volkswagen Polo hunting idle

All of a sudden my car does not hold a steady idle sometimes its holds at 1000rpm but then just drops down also sometimes when i stop at an intersection it just cuts off regardless of engine temp and this has affected fuel economy iv tried increasing the idle but did not help also sometimes ther is a fuel ourder cuming from the vents
