2005 Volkswagen Passat car does not always start straight away. sometimes it can take about 5 mins and a few attemts

Could be Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor

i used to have that problem on a renault it was crank shaft sensor

Crank sensor is a common fault on Renaults .

do you get smoke from exhaust as you crank over ? if yes its prob glow plugs ( don't hold me to that though)
