2002 Volkswagen Passat using too much oil

We bought the car a few months ago and about a week after we bought it the oil light came on asking us to check oil. We put 1.5 litres in it and it was fine for about a month until the oil light came on again about amonth later. why is it using so much oil?

could be 2 things either burning it or its leaking somewhere have these checked by your local garage
