2000 Volkswagen Passat temperature gauge

Car: Volkswagen Passat
Year: 2000
Variant: 1.8 s petrol
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
The temperature gauge has starting fluctuating between normal and zero and the header tank water is cool even after a long journey - still runs fine and heater is working normally. Any ideas? Is this something to be worried about?

Could be faulty temp .transmitter / sensor , reading low ..Normally would suggest thermostat suspect , but if heater o.k ,that should rule that out . If heater not as hot as used to be ,thermo. could be stuck open .Nothing serious to worry about if running o.k and coolant level all right . , but means engine not getting to correct working temp .

A link to a diagnos machine will show any stored faults and also the engine temp and live data.

does the heater still work well as the impellor on the back of the water pump can fall off ? . on some models you can remove the thermostat and feel the impellor through the thermostat hole, if it has broke make sure you get all the pieces out when you replace the water pump

I have a Volkswagen Passat 2003 and I have noticed the temperature gauge does not move from 50 deg and the heat coming from the heater is not as hot as it should be when I have the heater on high. Any solutions to thiS problem.
