2005 Volkswagen Passat flap motors don't work

I have been suffering with a problem with my heating/cooling system for the past 18 months.
The air is blowing hot all the time and can't be regulated as all three flap motors failed at the same time it is unbearable in hot weather because I can't turn the air con on. I had a diagnostic done and was told all 3 flap motors aren't working. Is this a common problem for them all to go at once or is this caused by something else ?
