1998 Volkswagen Passat rev counter

Hi My Passat 2.8 Syncro runs well, but its first car i have had that when accelerating (it is Auto tiptronic) hard rev counter goes right up past redline and almost 8000 revs is this normal? I am going to blow engine up(timing belt been done recently)is rev counter faulty Gearbox kickdown faulty somehow?

Would suggest you get set up /coding of your transmission checked with a VAG-COM before you need a new engine .
