1999 Volkswagen Golf high revs

Do the engine revs alter too or is it just a fault with the gauge / rev counter ?

the engine aswell,it revs up then goes back to normal....strange,at first i thought it was just the way i was driving but its not

Check/clean the idle control valve.

Check all vacuum pipes (hoses) for leaks .Could try cleaning throtle body / stepper motor .Some models may need realigned with vagcom .Sometimes ( if you know your radio code )if you disconnect the battery for about an hour the ecu will realign after you have driven it a few times .But varies from year / model etc .
