1998 Volkswagen Golf los of power when hot

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Year: 1998
Variant: 1.6
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I have a problem with my VW Golf Mk 4 1998. For several weeks, it has been running terribly. It is ok when cold but when the engine warms up the following problems occur - the engine 'lurches' intermittently, it has almost no acceleration/power, the engine stalls at traffic lights, rev speeds at 1600 when idling and this seems to be increasing (!)..

I have had it the garage and they don't know what it is - the diagnostics indicated speed sensor and camshaft position sensor issues but they admit it may not be these - I have replaced the speed sensor; checked all pipes for leaks; cleaned the throttle etc..but no joy. I don't think its the camshaft sensor and this is a big job..

Sorry for length of post but am at end of tether with the ...thing!

Many thanks

Could be the crankshaft sensor or the camshaft sensor .
