1996 Volkswagen Golf engine cuts out

Another engine cut out issue! My car has now been in the garage for 6 weeks trying to sort this out. Engine will run for random periods with no issues, then without warning, will just cut out - oil light comes on and the engine dies. Will restart if left for 5-10 mins. Can take an hour to cut out, or can take 5 mins from a cold start, there is no patter to this.
Garage have replaced altinator, oil pump, and even ECU with no solution. Garage says that the engine is cutting the fuel, but can't ind a reason for this. They have also removed the imobiliser, thinking it could be an electrical issue, but to no avail.
ANY IDEAS? It is drving me (and my wallett!) mad. If not the car is going to the scrappers... Any one want a well cared for, low mileage GTI??

you have not said if fuel pump replaced ? or fuel jets cleaned.

hi,i had the very same problem,,done my head in,lol.i was told there was a small ecu thing and a main one(the big one).as you can tell i dont know much about cars,but i got the small one replaced,,new timing belt,cars running excellent,,said when the car was heating up,the circut was expanding causing it to cut ou,then reconecting when it was cold,,also if i went over bumps,i was getting random cutt outs??? though there was only one big ecu thingy ,,apparently not?? under the steering wheel area i think??.lol just thot i'd mention it as i know how annoying it was,they were all baffeled at first,replaced lots of things except the money comming out my wallet..
