1997 Volkswagen Golf engine cuts out

My car keeps ramdomly cutting out. I have taken it to the garage and no faults are coming up! It only happens once evry so often, e.g my car cut out about 4 weeks ago while driving i tried starting again and wouldn't start left it for a couple of minutes and was fine again untill yesterday i was sat at some traffice lights and just cut out again! After about 4 attempts of starting it been fine untill today again. I turned the car off for about 5 mins then would'nt start!!! How strange can anyone help please???
