Creaking and knocking sounds

I have noticed recently that the car is sounding very creaky apart from the usual squeak when going over speed bumps. It now creaks at every opportunity, even turning the wheel. Turning the wheel also leads to a worryingly knocking sound.I think it may be the cv joint, but I am unable to be sure.

You got it in one Goonz! C.V joints are quite commmon on Golf's have you had a look to see if the boots are split?
