1998 Volkswagen Golf exhaust? rattle.

Sounds like a typical exhaust issue - very difficult to diagnose as there are many parts of an exhaust system which can cause a rattling sound. The fact that the noise goes away at higher revs would point towards a piece having worked itself loose somewhere which is only affected at lower frequencys/revs.

If you know a decent specialist garage take it there for them to have a look - try to avoid the chain tyre/exhaust companies as they'll quite likely try to sell you an entire new exhaust when it could only require one piece replacing. Don't accept the first quote either, have a shop around to see the differences which can be huge.

Check the heat sheild on the exhaust manifold/front pipe first to see if its loose or is touching on anything.

Does it do it if you rev the car when its stood still?

i have the same prob except with a different car, i have no rattling noise when i rev stood still dont suppose anyone knows why this is?
