1996 Volkswagen Golf limited power

Hi
Car pulls away fine, revs max at about 4500 with power drop off, almost like its being limited. Have changed fuel filter, checked vacum and pipes for air leaks.
any and all help greatly appreciated

Sounds like rev limiter cutting in .Could also be caused by timing being out .Best bet to get a diagnostic scan and see if any codes show .

Location: Selby England the most common reason these limit the revs at 5000 is the timing's out.. fairly common fault (especially after a belt change).. have the timing checked and the belt adjusted if needed.
the other reason these limit at 5000 is the ecu goes into safe mode. and that means having the codes read (vag-com lead from ebay for £20 and download the software from ross tec free). this should show any faults recorded on the ecu which need noting, erasing and then rescanning to see what comes back...a fairly common fault is the hall sender thats on the side of the dizzy as listed below

hey, cheers for the ideas of the timing belt and sensor, it ended up being the catylic converter, it had span. which made the engine not rev propertly, cheers for you help, hope this can help people to.
