2002 Volkswagen Golf intermittent misfire of engine

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Year: 2002
Variant: mark iv GTTDI PD130
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
Car has developed an intermittent misfire. This happens about once every 50 miles or so. The misfire will either clear itself after a few seconds or you will need to stop the car and turn off the engine. When you you restart the engine the problem disapears. When msifiring the car appears to be running on three cylinders and the ESP light appears on the dashboard which may be caused by the vibration of the engine. I have had the car linked up to a diagnostic system that shows no error codes. The car has done 130,000 miles has just been serviced and has a new fuel filter. I have been told it may be the ECU but this will cost £700+ to replace and that a second hand unit may be a waste of money. Has anyone come across this problem before.
Regards
Mark

hi mark the most common prob with the later golfs is the ignition coils these are individual type sitting directly on top of the spark plugs.
