1997 Volkswagen Golf petrol/fuel acting funny

hi other day my car died out n i put in £5 it gave me 36 miles and i put 5 in again and it gave me £20 the diffrance is i did keep my car standing longer did on and off it in cold days and drove a little so is there something wrong or isit just me leaving it on but i think i only left it on for 20 mins plus down here its icy

I don`t think there is anything wrong but i wouldn`t let it run out of fuel as you risk sucking up dirt from the bottom of the tank and blocking the system
