1998 Volkswagen Golf using too much fuel

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Year: 1998
Variant: 1.8TGTi
Categories: Engine & Drivetrain
My Golf has done almost 150,000 miles. I have just had it serviced ( somewhere I haven't used before)and maybe its a coincidence but since then the fuel consumption has gone through the roof, I put approx 5 gallons in a few days ago and it has done 75 miles and the fuel light has come on again. Before I take it back to the garage does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

To help you better , need to know what size of service they carried out and what it entailed , also what parts were replaced . Saying that , if it all started right after leaving their garage , it's down to something they altered . If the car is using that much fuel , it must be running far too rich and should affect performance , engine idle etc . As you say , get it back to them for examination and let us know how you get on .

P.s.
No sign of fuel leaks or petrol smell ?
