1998 Volkswagen Golf stalls at low revs

the car stalls at low revs intermitantly,it does start again,when doing 40mph it will miss a beat and you think it will stop but it then picks up again.possibly ecu problem related to jump leads being put on wrong and causing a spike???

i had this problem on my old golf. i would pull up to a junction and it would just die. anyway i needed the ECU remapping. that sorted it out straight away and it never came back.

Does it cost much money as my Golf is doing the same. Is this a common problem? If so, I will contact VW.
