1998 Volkswagen Golf power hood will not open or shut

hi, I had this and its not too uncommon, the problem is the ignition switch, good news is they are cheap, only about £3 from a breaker, bad news is that they are a swine to change. normally you remove the steering wheel and then slide the ignotion off the steering column, but you need a special pulling tool do remove the steering wheel in your car, and meesing with airbags is never good. The easiest fix is too steal power from another source. remove the steering column cowling and you can see the connecter block on the end of the key barrel, there are only 5 or 6 wires to it, I think the brown and red is the roof. there is the large red wire which is the main power feed. test the other wires to find one that becomes live when the ignition is turned on, and stays live when the engine runs, then simply cut the roof wire from the connecter block and connect it into the other wire. this restores power to your roof and radio, you may also be able to put the roof up and down without turning the engine off. In the nmean time, you can operate your roof manually by adjusting the hydraulic pressyre at the pump. In the left hand side of the car boot is a box shape cover, remove the 4 screws and reveal the pump for the roof. There is a brass key sticking out the side facing you, just turn it all the way anti clockwise and you will be able to manually move the roof. when you get the power vack on again, just screw it back in and the system will be ready to go
