2000 Volkswagen Golf oil coming out of exhaust

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Year: 2000
Variant: 2.0 GTI
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Hi about 2 days ago my Engine Emissions light came on, someone told me to check usual oil water etc of which i did and not too much oil in car but not low enough for the warning light to come on, so topped up the oil and as there is a smell i got someone to slowly rev the car and held a tissue over exhaust and there was oil on it.
Any help would be really useful. thank you in advance

is it definately oil? my guess is it will just be shit from the car not running properly. More often than not this is fixed by one of three things, air mass meter, lambda probe 1 or engine coolant temp sensor. The fact that your EM light is on should make it easier to diagnose. ps if it is oil it could be piston rings. early models suffered from this.
