1999 Volkswagen Golf stalling when stopping and erratic idling of engine.

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Year: 1999
Variant: 1.6 S
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When approaching/ stopping @ junctions in 1st/2nd gear the car stalls. When the car doesnt stall the engine idles erratically between 5 - 15 rpm up and down. Is this a problem with my battery or something else and how do i remedy this?

Thanks

Hi there! My misses has got a 1999 2.0 Golf and we had this same problem last year. Its the idle speed control valve over time they get clogged up and dont read correctly, you can have a go at removing and cleaning it to see if that works or just buy a new one if its too far gone...they arent that expensive and are easy to fit.

Also check the air mass sensor as these can go over time.
