2004 Volkswagen Golf engine cuts out

my car is cutting out when driving at 40 mph also it cuts out when slowing down. It has been doing this everyday for 5 weeks. The car does restart after cutting out. Its been in the garage nearly 2 weeks now as having difficulty in finding fault. It has become dangerous to drive as when I was turning right across traffic it cut out and of course my steering went.

Shouldn't take 2 weeks to solve , is it a Volkswagen dealership ? Have they scanned with Vag com or equivalent ?
