2001 Volkswagen Golf drivers door won't open using remote

The drivers door won't open with the remote, the button does not pop up, however it works fine if I unlock with the key. The alarm and immobiliser both disengage and all other doors open fine with the remote.
I have removed the door card and the metal rod that pushes the button up and down looks fine. I also checked that all the electrical connections were good.
Any ideas?

Sounds like a faulty door lock actuator / module .This shows what's involved ,

I have the same problem but the doors won't open automatically with either key fob.
I can open the door with the key and start the car but as soon as the ignition light comes on the alarm comes on for 20 seconds
