2003 Volkswagen Golf rough idle, lumpy, engine holding back when accelerating, hunting sometimes help!

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Year: 2003
Variant: 1.6 16v Petrol 93.000 miles
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
No codes, idle's roughly sometimes and shakes the engine a bit and the revs start fluctuating sometimes but no garage seem to be able to get to the bottom of it?? to date i have had tb cleaned and adapted, egr valve, catalytic convertor, new lambda, service with air, pollen, oil filter, new plugs, ignition coils, alternator, smoke test for pipes leaking which is ok, map sensor is working fine, i'm using good fuel shell not supermarket, seems like something is interrupting the air/petrol mix it sometimes feels like thudding vibrations one after the other? someone said it could be in the manifold? a flap that gets stuck? someone else suggested a injector? another said sticky valve? im at a loss as it seems it could be lots of reasons! been to probably 8 different garages but none seem to be able to fix it? help please thanks

Have you had it checked with VAGCOM for codes ? VWs did have problems with sticking valves in cyl head .

Been to probably 6 garages and all scans come back as clear and they all seem at a loss to what it is? had a compression test which was was fine? I was wondering what things do not come up on a scan? funny thing is that I cleaned up a bit of the battery today and greased and cleaned some connections and replaced a cap that was not fitted on a some kind of tank, checked all the fuses, took tape off of coil connection wires that where put there for some reason and the car is running perfectly now???? thing is epc light, oil workshop, emissions workshop and engine workshop have suddenly came up on the dash but like I say it is driving without hesitation! there is still a slight judder at idle but a lot better! this just adds to the confusion!

After changing the fuel filter it seemed to have resolved the issue but after a day or so the same lumpiness came back! someone else said they had the same problem in the same 1.6 car and changed so many parts with no success until they changed the fuel pressure regulator which resolved it! as this does not show on a scan, can this be the problem? I know these regulators are about £100 but don't want to change it without being sure.
