1998 Volkswagen Golf stalling at junctions

Just that I noted another caller with the same problem. ie my car after a visit to the garage comes out with more problems viz stalling a lot, The rev monitor goes down suddenly before I have stopped and thus cuts the engine out while I am still approaching junctions. This seems to have resolved itself after a day of driving short distances. What is going on?
