2005 Volkswagen Golf varying loss of power and engine management light

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Year: 2005
Variant: 1.9 Tdi manual
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Recently my golf went into a limp mode where it didnt pick up any power and wouldnt drive as a normal 1.9 should, the glow plugs light came up and i had them replaced immediately! At the moment the car drives okay however from time to time this loss of power will occur, but if i switch off the car and then turn it back on it drives normally, im very confused as to what the reason could be? Any help would be appreciated, also the engine management light is on, i took it to the garage and they said to me its coming up as an unknown fault, any ideas here as to what it could be?
Any help is very much appreciated, thanks!

Did the garage have the correct equipment for scanning ? i.e VAG-COM\VCDS scan .If not that may be why it doesn't show the code fault .Was it not a VW garage ?Could check / replace fuel filter .

could be mass airflow sensor fault try disconnecting it see if power returns if it does replace it and get fault code deleted
