1997 Volkswagen Golf pipe of at the crank end

i took my air filter off and there was a load of gunk coming out of it in the air filter,i cleaned the air filter and the top of the pipe but i cant seem to get the pipe off at the crank,(any ideas please)and also there is a big split in the breather pipe from the air filter to the manifold..thank you
