1997 Volkswagen Golf keeps cutting out

my car srats straight away but when i slow down and go through the gears you can feel it cut out,and when you get to a juntion it cuts out unles you keep in gear until you have about stopped and the tickover is very low,does it need tickover turning up abit and ifso how do you do this..thanks

Is this a carbretted model if so try cleaning the carbretter, it may be clogged up
