2003 Volkswagen Golf glow plug warning light on not flashing

Recently the car has been sluggish to turn over on starting and today the glow plug warning light came on after driving for about 6mins and computer advised me to go to garage workshop.
I know these are similar to spark plugs in petrol engine but what will happen if I continue using the car for a few days before my car is seen by a mechanic?
